Swiss impact investor responsAbility Investments said it has raised a total of $350 million as part of the third closing of its $500 million Asia climate investment strategy.

The firm said it is on track to achieve its $500 million target by 2025, investing in low-emission solutions such as renewable energy, battery storage, and energy efficiency projects across Asia.

KfW, representing Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), increased its junior capital commitment by €20 million ($21 million). The commitment catalyzed an additional $100 million from institutional investors, bringing private sector contributions to over $200 million, the firm said.

Launched in November with a target of $500 million, the climate investment strategy uses a blended finance structure that combines public funding with private sector capital to support projects with high CO2 reduction potential. In August, DealStreetAsia reported that responsAbility had raised over $300 million for the strategy.

The investments are projected to save approximately 16 million tonne CO2 emissions over the lifetime of their assets.

Last year, DealStreetAsia reported that the firm was closing down its Thailand office as part of a strategic move towards streamlining its Asia operations. The firm will continue focusing on core markets in SE Asia and maintain a strong presence in the region.

“Financing the energy transition in emerging markets like Asia requires close collaboration between the public actors and the private sector. Our strategy and blended finance structure provide institutional investors with access to attractive, risk-adjusted investment opportunities that also contribute significantly to decarbonizing the region,” Stephanie Bilo, Chief Client & Investment Solutions Officer at responsAbility, said.

The firm’s climate investment strategy focuses on renewable energy, battery energy storage, electric mobility, energy efficiency, and the circular economy across India and SE Asia. Its typical ticket sizes range from $10-35 million.

Some of its recent investments include Singapore-based sustainable resource management firm CleanEdge Resources; Indian EV ride-hailing firm BluSmart; and Singapore-based water treatment solution provider Gradiant.

Since its inception in 2003, responsAbility has deployed over $16.3 billion in impact investments. With over 270 employees collaborating across 7 offices, as of 31 December 2024, the company manages $5.4 billion in assets across approximately 300 portfolio companies in around 70 countries.

Since 2022, responsAbility has been part of M&G plc, the international savings, and investments business, and contributes to enhancing M&G’s capabilities in impact investing.
